The digestive system is an intricate and extensive part of the body. It is responsible for getting rid of waste and helps body absorb essential nutrients. Digestive problems can happen anywhere along the way. Minor problems that are left untreated can lead to more serious, chronic illnesses.

Being constipated means one’s bowel movements are tough or happen less often than normal. Almost everyone goes through it sooner or later. Although it’s not usually serious, one feels much better when body is back on track. The normal length of time between bowel movements varies widely from person to person. Some people have them three times a day. Others have them only once or twice a week.

Constipation is defined medically as fewer than three stools per week and severe constipation as less one than per week.

Some of the symptoms include:

• Lower abdominal discomfort
• A sense of incomplete evacuation (the feeling that you still have to “go”)
• Straining to have a bowel movement
• Hard or small stools
• Rectal bleeding and/or anal fissures caused by hard stools
• Physiological distress and/or obsession with having bowel movements.

Constipation happens when the colon absorbs too much water; this can occur if the muscles in the colon are contracting slowly or poorly, causing the stool to move too slowly and lose more water. Constipation may be caused by not eating enough fibers or not drinking enough fluids. It can also be a side-effect of certain medicines, hormonal disorders, high levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy or related to an underlying medical condition. Physical inactivity can also be the cause of constipation. In many cases, the cause is not clear. Going without one for two or three days does not cause physical discomfort, only mental distress (in some people).

Laxat aid tablets developed by Bakson, can be used to treat constipation caused by conditions such as slowing of the intestines, prolonged bed rest/hospitalization, overuse of medications (e.g., narcotics) or irritable bowel syndrome.

Changes required in daily routine:

• Drink two to four extra glasses of water a day, unless doctor has asked to limit fluids for another reason.
• Try warm liquids, especially in the morning.
• Add fruits and vegetables in diet.
• Eat prunes and bran cereal.
• Don’t use laxatives for more than 2 weeks without consulting doctor.

Action of individual components

Cassia angustifolia: It is mainly used as a laxative for relieving constipation, as blood purifier and to treat skin diseases. It works by retaining water in the intestines, which causes movement of the intestines. It is also used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids and weight loss.

Terminalia chebula: It benefits the whole digestive tract and increases appetite, improves digestion and absorption. It provides effective relief for piles, gastro-intestinal infections, colic and wind, worms, constipation, IBS and vomiting. It is also said to be effective for use in inflammation of the mucous membrane and ulcers as well as inflammation of the colon.
