The most common worms that can affect children are:

• Pinworm or Enterobius vermicularis which manifests with itching, irritability, restlessness, insomnia and teeth grinding with nausea and occasional stomach pain in children.
• Whipworm or Trichuris trichuria which presents with vomiting, headache, diarrhoea with blood, inability to control the faecal urge, and weight loss.
• Tapeworm or Taenia infestation presents with nausea, weakness, abdominal pain, loss of appetite or sudden hunger and deficiency in vitamin and mineral.
• Roundworm or Ascaris lumbricoids presents with quick weight loss, fever, wheezing and failure to grow. The worm can also come out via mouth or nose.

Symptoms: There are certain symptoms common to all worms like bloating, loss of appetite, weight loss, pain in abdomen, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, fever, dry cough, anaemia and/or painful urination.

Diagnosis is done with the help of clinical features and stool test.

Action of Ingredients:

Mercurius vivus: It is indicated when there is discharge of ascarides and lumbrici with excessive hunger or complete loss of appetite. Violent empty eructations and nausea when coughing. Pit of stomach burns, and is swollen and sensitive to touch. Weak digestion, with continuous hunger. Ineffectual urging to stool every moment, with tenesmus in the rectum. Stools green or contains green mucus, with blood, slimy, brownish, whitish-gray. Acrid and burning faecal matter, excoriating the anus.

Cina:Cina is pre-eminently a worm remedy, as it causes all the symptoms which characterize worm infestation, both mental, nervous and bodily. It corresponds more to the effects of lumbrici then to those of other worms. Grinding teeth during sleep. Restless sleep, tossing all about the bed. Child lies on belly or on hands and knees during sleep. Nocturnal bedwetting, urine white, turbid, at times fetid. For the cases of worms with itching of anus. Roundworms or threadworms. Stools are white, and watery. Involuntary stools with reddish mucus. Stools are greenish and slimy. White mucus like small pieces of popped corn, preceded by pinching colic.

Stannum Metallicum: A number of worm symptoms appear in the pathogenesis of Stannum like sinking, empty, all-gone feeling, diaphragmatic and abdominal pains, tendency to excessive mucous secretions, pale, sunken, sickly countenance, with dark rings round eyes, convulsions.

Nausea and vomiting, in the morning, from odour of cooking food, especially after a meal, followed by bitter and watery vomiting. Violent retching, followed by vomiting of (undigested) food. Aching in stomach sometimes very violent. Soreness and smarting at anus, with fine stitches, immediately after a stool. Stools: green, curdy, with colic, insufficient with renewed desire afterwards. Passes worms, lumbrici, taenia.
